One of the resources in this series is focused on Motivational Interviewing (MI). Motivational Interviewing is an empathic and non-judgmental approach that encourages clients to explore and resolve their ambivalence about making positive changes in their lives. The approach is based on four key principles: 1) expressing empathy, 2) developing discrepancy, 3) rolling with resistance, and 4) supporting self-efficacy. These principles are supported by various techniques, such as open-ended questions, reflective listening, affirmations, and summarizing. The Spotlight on PATH Practices and Programs resource on Motivational Interviewing provides an overview of the approach and its principles, as well as practical guidance on how to use MI in PATH programs to engage and support clients in achieving their goals.
