Fortunately, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) provides a very brief (i.e., 2-4 session) and effective treatment option for clients with chronic insomnia. However, despite many clinicians reporting familiarity with CBT-I, updates to both the diagnostic criteria for Insomnia Disorder and CBT-I itself are often overlooked. Gaps in knowledge include believing that “we don’t diagnose or treat insomnia when there is a comorbid condition”, “we all need 8 hours of sleep” or “sleep hygiene is effective”. To address these knowledge gaps, a practical and clinical 6-hour workshop led by a sleep specialist will provide updates and step-by-step guidance on using CBT-I for comorbid insomnia. Replacing outdated sleep hygiene advice with CBT-I strategies, and learning to tailor treatment to clients with complex issues, can lead to better sleep and improved well-being for clients.
